Grade 12 – STEM students from the University of the Philippines High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) stood out as they presented their respective research papers last January 16-18 at UP Diliman’s Melchor Hall for this year’s Alchemes Golconda research fair.
With this year’s theme of “Golconda: Polishing the Innovative Facets of the Filipino Youth,” the students competed under the category of Physical Science. Alongside, the two other categories were Life Science and Applied Science.
The students comprising of two teams: Alyssa Jane Gimeno, Theodore Alexis Juliano, Julia Zacal presented their research entitled “Raw Kapok Fiber and Dried Luffa Sponge as Composite Materials for Natural Oil Adsorption,” while John Emmanuel Ocastro, Reese Klyde Malaki, and Venetta Jane Rodrigo presented their research entitled “Efficacy of Green Mussel Shells as an Adsorbent in Coconut Oil Refinement.” both secured spots in the Top 20 of the said research fair out of 193 entries.
Together with this achievement, this participation also signifies the schools first-ever involvement in this research competition. (Reine Shaula Duspar)
